| Supervisors Thank Walters, Hear Real Estate Assessment Concerns

| Low Moor, VA (June 3, 2025) - The Alleghany County Board of Supervisors heard from a number of real estate owners about high assessments recently given to them by the reassessment team hired to do the job this spring.
Some valuations were markedly higher.

County Administrator Reid Walters was honored by the Board for excellent service (he will be leaving his post this next week).
VDOT's Susan Hammond explained issues being confronted with necessary bridge work over railroad tracks on Rte 42, Suzanne Adcock-Nicely outlined reasons for a budget amendment, an Iron Gate Fire Department member mentioned a big cost for fire equipment that his department is trying to deal with, AHCS Exec. Dir. Ingrid Barber explained what she was doing with some allocated Opioid grant money, Tracy Persinger (AHPS Dir. of Finance) supplied details of the school division's capital expenditure program, and more.
County Attorney Jim Guynn told the Supervisors that despite several communications from outside attorneys with respect to claims of alleged carbon monoxide poisoning at a recent Covington Middle School incident, liability may not be assigned to Alleghany County. The Alleghany Highlands School Board is a distinct, separate public corporation.
• the proposed sewer rates for Clifton Forge are $3.86 per thousand gallons. The money sewer rate for the town of Iron Gate is $15,013.82 per month.
• the proposed real estate tax rate is .49/$100 of assessed valuation
• the proposed tangible personal property rate and that of machinery and tools is $2.98 per $100 of assessed valuation
• both water and sewer rates for county residents are proposed to increase $1 each per month.
• the Supervisors approved an interior demolition big to Taff and Frye for the former Wells Fargo building
• appointed Heather Terrell to a term on the Library Board
• appointed Nick Moga to a term on the Recreation Board
• reappointed James Griffith to a slot on the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission
• reappointed Matt Garten to to the Social Services Board
• approved amendments to the Classification Pay Plan that included a 3% cost of living wage hike for county employees.
