JR Governor's School Holds Annual Awards Ceremony

| Clifton Forge, VA (June 3, 2025) - The Jackson River Governor’s School held its annual awards ceremony Tuesday evening at Mountain Gateway Community College, with Director Eddie Graham officiating.
Students who were recognized as the outstanding scholars in each of the classes offered at the school included; Kathryn Johnson (Alleghany High School), chemistry and statistics; Dylan Tyree (Parry McCluer High School), physics; Cadiz Marshall (AHS), scientific research; Dominic Brown (AHS), pre-calculus and information technology; Rayshan Richardson (PMHS), calculus; and Olivia Gentry-Delgado (AHS), college success skills.
Brown and Johnson were also recognized for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.
JRGS students who earned associate degrees from MGCC included Kinley Huffman (AHS) and Rayshan Richardson and Dylan Tyree.
Those who earned Career Studies Certificates in Science and Mathematics from MGCC included Brown, Joowon Chung, Gentry-Delgado, Taylor Jenkins, Johnson, Carter Nicely, Brenden Seckner, and Emma Skidmore, all from AHS; Millie, Joe, Glick and Vincent Wilson PMHS.
Academic achievement awards were presented to Cadiz Marshall and James Ross, AHS, and from PMHS, Millie Glick, Rayshan Richardson and Dylan Tyree.
Academic excellence awards were presented to Dominic Brown, Joowon Chung, Olivia Gentry-Delgado, Kayden Jack, Taylor Jenkins, Kathryn Johnson, Keegan Morris, Carter Nicely and Brendan Seckner, AHS; and Vincent Wilson, PMHS.
Completing their first year at JRGS were Brown, Chung, Gentry-Delgado, Jenkins, Johnson, Nicely, Seckner and Skidmore, all from AHS and from PMHS, Glick and Wilson.
Seven students were recognized as the 2025 graduates from JRGS, as well as their college plans: Kinley Huffman, James Madison, University, health sciences, Kayden Jack, JMU nursing; Cadiz Marshall, Emory Riddle for aerospace engineering; KeeganMorris, Radford University and Virginia Tech, criminology; and James Ross, Virginia Commonwealth University for mechanical engineering, all from AHS; and from PMHS, Rayshan Richardson, Virginia Tech for finance, and Dylan Tyree, University of Virginia for electrical engineering.
Suzanne Ostling, associate vice president of student affairs at MGCC, was the keynote speaker. Also recognized were two school division superintendents who will be retiring: Dr. Tony Francis, Buena Vista, and Dr. Jonathan Russ, Botetourt County. | |
