Live Crucifixion Scene Draws Crowd
| By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Covington, VA (Apr. 18, 2025)— On this Good Friday, the Journal paid a quick visit to Temple Baptist Church, sitting at 300 Stratton Street in Covington, VA, to witness their Live Crucifixion Scene firsthand.
Running from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., both Friday and Saturday, viewers are free to park behind the church and walk down onto their front lawn to experience a unique opportunity of traveling back in time and seeing firsthand what it might have been like for the crowd to witness Jesus dying on the cross. As it's shared in all four Gospels, Jesus was crucified with two other men on a hilltop on Calvary. Sticking true to the Word, church members and volunteers for Temple Baptist Church took turns reenacting His crucifixion, complete with the two other men crucified next to Jesus, various members in the crowd watching in mourning, and Roman soldiers guarding the "dying" men.
We must admit, the reenactment was a moving one to experience firsthand, despite having visited in the past. In one such previous visit, which was confirmed this evening, we were told the volunteers on the cross rotate every 15 minutes because of how tired their arms become.
Visitors were also invited inside where refreshments were served before making their way out of the parking lot out back. This year, there was a new addition to the scene: a "grave" complete with the rolled-away stone that visitors are free to view or capture photos of on their way out of the parking lot. | |
