UPDATED: Local Easter Sunrise Services By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer Alleghany County, VA (Apr. 10, 2025)— As the chill of winter melts away and the promise of spring unfolds, Easter emerges as a time of renewal and hope, a celebration of new beginnings. For many in our area, there's no better way to embrace the spirit of this cherished holiday than by participating in a sunrise service on Easter Sunday, April 20. Below, you will find many alternatives for celebrating the resurrection of Christ at sunrise with one of your favorite churches. Each of these services— some with events to follow— are open to the public. 6 a.m.— Covenant Community Church, located at 149 Maple Ave. in Covington, will be having a "Resurrection Sunday Sunrise" service with a message delivered by Pastor Stephanie Clark. 7 a.m.— Calvary Christian Church, located at 1329 S. Pond Street in Covington. 7 a.m.— Pastor Brandon Nicely with Victory Baptist Church will be officiating a Sunrise Service on the beach area at Douthat State Park. 7 a.m.— First Christian Church, located at 231 E. Fudge Street in Covington will be having a Sunrise Service, with breakfast to follow. 8 a.m.— Grace Brethren Church promises to have retired Pastor Billy Price officiating a sunrise service at the Humpback Bridge in Covington. 8:30 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. - Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main Street, Covington, will have First Light Praise & Worship at 8:30 a.m., pancake breakfast at 9:00 a.m., Easter Egg hunt at 10:00 a.m. & Traditional Worship at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome. 9:15 a.m.— St. Stephens Anglican Catholic Church, located at 108 Turner Rd. in Clifton Forge, will be hosting Mass on Easter Sunday. 6:30 a.m.— Good News on Main, located at 331 W. Main Street in Covington, will be hosting a Sunrise Service at the Love Park across from Good News. Make sure to bring your own chair. 6 a.m.— Covington Baptist Church will be having a Sunrise Service on the lawn of one of their member's houses, located at 114 Kellison Lane in Covington, VA. 7 a.m.— Pastor Carl "Shorty" Wolfe has announced that Loving Life Fellowship, located at 717 Commercial St. in Clifton Forge, will be having a Sunrise Service. 7 a.m.— McAllister Church will be having an Easter Sunrise joint service in partnership with Falling Springs Evangelical Presbyterian Church at the Cliffview Golf Club, located at 410 Friels Drive in Covington. 10 a.m. & 11 a.m.— Immanuel Baptist Church, located at 2819 Douthat Road in Clifton Forge, will be having their regular church services that day with Sunday School at 10, and worship at 11, but is service a special Easter Dinner following morning worship.
