Clifton Forge, VA (Nov. 6, 2026)—Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) held a very special Donor-Scholar Reception in the Moomaw Center on Friday, November 6. The hour-and-a-half event ran from 3:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. and was catered by Family Treets Restaurant.
Dr. John Rainone, President of MGCC, and Lois Switzer, Board President of the MGCC Educational Foundation, both offered a few opening remarks before the ceremony was handing over to Bruce Loving, Executive Director of the MGCC Educational Foundation. Chad Stencil served as student speaker, giving a moving speech about how he first became intoxicated at 11 years old, made mistakes, and was incarcerated for several years. Afterwards, he turned his life around and used his story to help others. Stencil was the only speaker to receive a standing ovation by the entire room.
In the midst of the ceremony, a memoriam was given to Christopher Baker, a former student who passed suddenly in 2013 at the tender age of 21. His mother, Doris Withrow Baker, recently donated $10,000 to MGCC. Gail McLeod was another donor who was recognized for her generosity. McLeod, by the time all is said and done, will have donated approximately $900,000 to the college from her estate.
