Covington, VA (Nov. 3, 2026)— This evening, Covington City Council met for its monthly work session to discuss regular business. During the meeting, Covington City Manager, Allen Dressler, gave a brief report on the many projects going on in the city of Covington.

Among those were the ongoing street repairs happening as the result of a major Columbia Gas infrastructure project. Because their work requires tearing out pavement in order to lay down new pipelines, many local streets have been patched back together but will eventually be repaired in full.

Dressler read a portion of a report prepared by Columbia Gas this evening regarding the downtown area that stated, "We are hopeful that, by the time we get to the first or second week of December... they will fire up the new lines. So that means this area down here (downtown) will be completed, and then from there, they will begin the phase two portion up where we're at Fudge and Cherry and those streets up there," said Dressler. "And then from there, they'll be moving over to the Parrish Court area."

Additionally, Dressler spoke on the sewer project in Covington that has now seen the end of the road, pun intended. The project came about as the result of a $7 million dollar grant that the city received, thus no taxpayer dollars were involved.

Dressler also paused to note that the city of Covington received a very prestigious award this year from the Virginia Municipal League (VML): the 2026 Working with Youth Award. The city manager was full of smiles as he showed the trophy to tonight's attendees and members of council.

Finally, Dressler spoke on the holiday lights currently underway at the Jackson River Sports Complex. The city manager noted that more lights were being added to the display which will soon be open to the public upon completion.

The entirety of Dressler's report was captured this evening by the Journal and is currently available for viewing on the Alleghany Journal Facebook page.
