Iron Gate Council Holds Unofficial Meeting Amid Quorum Shortage

Iron Gate, VA (Oct. 29, 2026)— The town of Iron Gate held an unofficial meeting this meeting at town hall following a shortage of council members in attendance. The shortage left them one member shy of being able to meet their quorum to vote on official town business matters.

In attendance was Councilwoman Jennifer Tyree, Councilman Chris Mayo, and Councilwoman Norvella Burrell. Tonight's unofficial meeting included the reading of the mayor's report, a presentation from AHPS school superintendent, Kim Halterman and Communication Specialist for AHPS, Darrell Gleason, as well as a brief discussion on why council had proposed the idea of going from a 7-member council to a 5-member council. Given there weren't enough members tonight for a quorum, thus exemplifying the suggestion, it seemed obvious why the topic was brought up during the meeting.

Halterman and Gleason were present to discuss the proposed 1% tax increase going on the ballot on November 3 in our area. As previously reported by the Journal, the 1% tax increase came about just this year due to new language added by the Virginia General Assembly allowing qualifying counties and cities to propose an additional local sales tax to go exclusively toward capital projects for local schools. With the question now on the ballot, it will be up to the citizens to decide yes or no on the tax increase come November 3.

AHPS School Superintendent, Kim Halterman, and Communication Specialist for AHPS Schools, Darrell Gleason, gave a brief presentation on what the potential 1% tax increase would mean for the schools should residents vote yes on November 3.
