City Manager Allen Dressler Notes Upcoming Community Events, Tourism Summit Event, and Other Business During Covington Work Session By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer   Covington, VA (Oct. 6, 2026)— It was an informative evening on Tuesday night, October 6, when Covington City Council held their monthly work session in city hall. The meeting began promptly at 6:30 p.m., but was missing Mayor Raymond Hunter who, it was later disclosed, was in the hospital facing health issues. We here at the Journal send him warm thoughts for a speedy recovery. Tonight's meeting included a detailed report from Covington City Manager Allen Dressler who first noted some upcoming community events including, but not limited to, Hometown Halloween on October 24 on Main Street, as well as the free weekly concerts on Saturday night at the Jackson River Sports Complex (JRSC). Dressler also pointed out some recently successful events including Farmfest, the homecoming parade and bonfire which occurred in Clifton Forge Monday evening, fall cleanup, and the Tourism Summit held at the Masonic Theatre in Clifton Forge earlier today. As it pertains to the Tourism Summit, Dressler, who was a participant in the event hosted by the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, spoke fondly of the earlier event. He also mentioned the Lumberjacks, a group of about 35 college-aged athletes who move into the City of Covington every year for a span of 2.5 months during baseball season and spend their dollars in Covington. A few other key points of Dressler's report included the mill shutdown on October 13, the need for a concrete wall repair under the Chestnut Street underpass which is a project that is currently in its early stages, and a hydrant flushing in Covington scheduled to begin this Sunday. Dressler's full report will soon be made available on our Facebook page.
