| Iron Gate, VA (Oct. 1, 2026) - The following is a news release from Alleghany County/Covington Sheriff Kyle Moore.
"On September 28, 2026 Sheriff Moore of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a citizen of the town of Iron Gate and told, about a residence (401 5th St. in Iron Gate) that had a very bad smell coming from the home and there was a large amount of dogs in the house.
"Investigation by Sgt. Jefferson and Moore revealed that the home was owned by Calvin Robinson and that 17 dogs were inside the residence. The animals ranged in age from 7-8 weeks old to older animals. The animals were in a very poor state and were seized after Robinson refused to surrender the animals. The animals were taken to the Alleghany County Humane Center, where they were examined by a veterinarian from Highlands Veterinary Clinic.
"Robinson was arrested and transported to the Alleghany Regional Jail. This investigation continues by the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office. Robinson is facing several charges surrounding the investigation."

Statement from the Vet:
" The dogs presented with severe, extensive matting of the hair coat, with many areas heavily soiled and contaminated with feces and urine, as well as live fleas present with concerns of heavy intestinal parasite load. The degree of matting and contamination has significantly compromised their overall well-being. The dogs will require immediate care to address their physical condition, including removal of the severely matted and contaminated coats, cleaning, and medical treatment of individual health concerns.
"Each dog will need to be further evaluated, as their medical needs and recovery may vary. Given the extent of their conditions they will require ongoing veterinary care, monitoring, and supportive treatment as they recover.
"MY primary concern is the health and welfare of these animals. Going forward with appropriate care, nutrition, hygiene, and a safe environment I hope that we can have a positive outcome for each of these patients. We commend the action taken by Alleghany County Sheriff's Department and Alleghany County Humane Society and are forever grateful for the service to our community."
