NextStage Arts Opens Doors for AHS Band Students   Low Moor, VA (July 23, 2026) - Six Alleghany High School students recently participated in the Summer Symposium at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., through their involvement in the NextStage Arts Program. Students Cole Brown, Claire Dudley, Benjamin Eggleston, Novia Foley, Joey Thomas, and Chloe Walton spent a week learning from Western Carolina University faculty and students, national instructors, and members of Carolina Crown, a nationally recognized Drum Corps International ensemble known for its high-level marching, musicianship, and performances. During the symposium, students strengthened their skills in musicianship, marching technique, choreography, and instrument fundamentals. The week concluded with a performance that highlighted the students’ growth and allowed them to perform alongside Carolina Crown. “We are incredibly proud of these students and the effort they showed while representing AHS,” said Adam Eggleston, director of bands at Alleghany. “They worked hard, learned a lot, and made the most of this opportunity.” While Alleghany High School bands have traditionally sent a small number of students to the Western Carolina University camp each year, this year’s expanded participation was made possible through NextStage Arts.  The program is an Alleghany Highlands Public Schools initiative funded through a Virginia Department of Education innovation grant. The grant supports creative programs that provide students with new learning opportunities, help expand access to the arts. Recently, four AHS students participated in a recent theater intensive at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, where they gained additional experience in performance and theater-related skills. NextStage Arts is helping AHPS students take part in experiences they may not otherwise have access to. These opportunities allow students to learn new skills, explore their interests, and gain experiences that can help guide their future education and career choices.
