AHPS Announces New Elementary Open House Format   Low Moor, VA (July 23, 2026) - Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will host its elementary open house on Monday, Aug. 10, with a new grade-level schedule designed to provide families with a more organized opportunity to meet teachers, visit classrooms and prepare for the first day of school. The grade-level schedule will help families connect with teachers while allowing each elementary school to welcome families in a structured way. The format is similar to the open house structure already used at Alleghany High School and Covington Middle School. The elementary open house schedule is: 11 a.m. — Early Childhood and Prekindergarten (VPI) families Noon — Kindergarten families 1 p.m. — First grade families 2 p.m. — Second grade families 3 p.m. — Third grade families 4 p.m. — Fourth grade families 5 p.m. — Fifth grade families “Open houses are an important time for families and teachers to begin building connections before the school year begins,” said Cynthia Morgan, Director of Instruction. “The grade-level schedule gives families a guide for when to attend while keeping the flexibility that many families need. We want every family to have the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and feel prepared for the year ahead.” Assigned times are provided as a guideline and are not required.  “We recognize that many families have children in multiple grade levels or attend different schools within the division. Families who need to attend outside of their assigned time are welcome to do so,” Morgan said. At each school, teachers will be available throughout the open house event to meet with families, answer questions, and help students and parents get ready for the upcoming school year.  Families can also review curriculum materials.   “Building strong partnerships with families starts with opportunities to connect,” Morgan said. “We look forward to welcoming our students and families back and beginning another successful school year together.” The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 12.
