Ribbon-Cutting Held for Highlands Centre Secure Storage
| By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Covington, VA (June 18, 2026)— The former KMart building, located at 129 Mall Road in Covington, has recently been occupied by a new tenant: Highlands Centre Secure Storage. The new storage facility, owned by Matt and Dizzy Garten, houses over 500 storage units.
The pamphlet boasts a "large, affordable selection of climate-controlled units in a variety of sizes to meet every need..." According to Matt Garten, having a climate-controlled building was important in meeting the needs of customers to prevent melting, as well as the shrinking and expansion of furniture, etc. Garten also noted a current promotion of 50% off for the first three months.
The small event featured speeches by Josh Taylor, Executive Director of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism; Michael Foster, Board Member of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism; Susan Wolfe, Vice-Mayor of Covington; Debbie Laudermilk, Councilwoman for the town of Clifton Forge; Tyler Sizemore, Deputy Director for Alleghany Highlands Economic Development; and Matt Garten representing both the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors and speaking as one of the owners of Highlands Centre Secure Storage. | |  | Matt Garten, Alleghany County Board of Supervisors and co-owner of Highlands Centre Secure Storage, spoke in detail about the new storage facility which houses over 500 units in various sizes and is climate-controlled for customer convenience.
