Record-Breaking JR Scenic Trail Marathon Expected to Welcome More Than 500 Runners to the Highlands This Weekend   Covington, Va (June 10, 2026) - The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is excited to announce that the Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K will return to the Alleghany Highlands this weekend on Saturday, June 13th bringing a record number of participants and visitors to the region. More than 500 runners are expected to take part in this year's event, making it the largest Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon in the event's history. Participants will travel from across the country to experience one of the region's premier outdoor recreation events while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Jackson River Scenic Trail. "The continued growth of this event is a testament to the incredible outdoor assets we have here in the Alleghany Highlands," said Makayla Nobles, Event Coordinator for the Chamber. "Not only does this race showcase the Jackson River Scenic Trail to visitors from across the country, but it also generates significant economic impact for our local lodging properties, restaurants, retail businesses, and attractions." Race activities will take place along the Jackson River Scenic Trail, with runners utilizing the first 13 miles of the trail throughout the day. The start/finish line area will be stationed at the Intervale Trailhead of the Jackson River Scenic Trail. Community members are encouraged to come out and cheer on participants as they make their way through the course. Motorists should be aware that runners will be crossing roadways at several locations, including Petticoat Junction and along Route 687 near Falling Spring Gardens. Drivers are encouraged to use caution, remain alert for race participants, and follow any instructions provided by race volunteers and public safety personnel. The Jackson River Scenic Trail will remain open to the public during the event; however, residents should expect heavier-than-normal trail traffic and congestion between approximately 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Those planning to utilize the trail are encouraged to allow extra time and be mindful of race participants. As a Boston Marathon qualifying race, the event has become one of the region's signature outdoor recreation events, helping introduce new visitors to the Alleghany Highlands and reinforcing the area's reputation as a destination for outdoor adventure.
