AHPS Honorees Named to Serve Virginia Honor Roll

Low Moor, VA (April 22, 2026) - Alleghany Highlands Public Schools is recognizing three individuals connected to the school division who were named to the Winter 2026 Serve Virginia Honor Roll.

The Serve Virginia Honor Roll recognizes individuals across the commonwealth who make a difference through volunteer service in their communities. Honorees are nominated by schools, colleges, nonprofits and local governments for their service and leadership.

The Winter 2026 list highlights volunteers from across Virginia, including those nominated by the College of William & Mary, the University of Richmond, Virginia Beach City Public Schools, and the Governor’s Awards on Service and Volunteerism

AHPS-associated honorees include:

Chris Fisher, AHPS supervisor of safety and security.

Elijah Halterman, a junior at Alleghany High School, nominated in partnership with the City of Covington.

Sarai Warrick, a recent Alleghany High School college adviser, recognized for her work with Advise VA, a program that helps students plan for college and careers.

The Alleghany Highlands School Board formally recognized Fisher, Halterman and Warrick at its April 21 meeting.

In January 2026, AHPS launched a program to recognize school volunteers and identify potential candidates for the Serve Virginia Honor Roll. This process may also allow AHPS to directly nominate its own volunteers.

AHPS nominees are recognized for volunteer service that directly supports teaching and learning, such as tutoring, mentoring to improve engagement and attendance, and assisting with school operations so teachers can focus on instruction

AHPS officials say the division emphasizes the values of kindness, respect, and service to others starting in elementary school. School leaders note that these lessons inspire both students and staff to give back to their schools and communities.

“Service is a key part of what makes our schools and our community strong,” said Jon Lanford, chairman of the Alleghany Highlands School Board. “We are proud of Chris, Elijah and Sarai for the time and energy they have given to strengthening the Alleghany Highlands.”
