Late Mayor Fred Forbes III Honored During Covington Work Session
| By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Covington, VA (Apr. 7, 2026)— The Covington City Council gathered this evening for their regularly scheduled work session that was marked by a somber tribute to the late Mayor Fred Forbes III. This was the first meeting since his passing last month.
Forbes began his journey in local governance as a council member on January 1, 2023, becoming mayor in July 2025 in the wake of the Mayor Lance Carson's passing. Though Forbes' time as Mayor was brief, his impact on the city was profound.
Tonight, the council paid homage to the late Mayor Forbes with a solemn moment of silence. Afterwards, City Manager Allen Dressler read a touching proclamation honoring the service of Mayor Fred F. Forbes III. It reads as follows:
"WHEREAS, the City of Covington mourns the passing of its sitting Mayor, Fred F. Forbes III, who departed this life on Saturday, Mary 14, 2026; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Forbes was elected to Covington City Council on January 19, 2025, following the untimely passing of Mayor William E. "Lance" Carson, Jr., serving with dedication and a commitment to honor his predecessor; and
WHEREAS, even prior to his election, he demonstrated his commitment to public service by advocating for the establishment of March 14 as Fallen Officer's Day in the City of Covington; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Forbes was known for his straightforward, genuine, and respectful nature, treating all people as equals and leading with authenticity; and
WHEREAS, he held a deep love for the City of Covington and its citizens, working tirelessly to support the community's growth, well-being, and future; and
WHEREAS, he believed in the potential of every individual and was especially passionate about efforts that supported rehabilitation, growth, and second chances within the community, including his meaningful involvement in Recovery Court initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Forbes was a true servant of his community, known not only for his leadership, but for his actions, quietly helping others and always stepping in where he could make a difference; and
WHEREA, he valued teamwork and strong leadership, sharing a respected working relationship with City Manager Allen Dressler and supporting a strong foundation for effective and compassionate governance; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his service, the City of Covington lowered its flags to half-staff in his honor; and
WHEREAS, the date of March 14 now carries lasting significance in the City of Covington, representing both a day of remembrance for fallen officers and the passing of a Mayor who dedicated his life to serving his community; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the Covington City Council does hereby honor and remember the life, service, and legacy of Mayor Fred F. Forbes III, and expresses its deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life; and
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that the City of Covington will forever remember Mayor Fred F. Forbes III as a dedicated public servant, a proud leader, and a man who truly loved his community, whose legacy will remain a part of this City for generations to come.
