| By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Covington, VA (Apr. 3, 2026)— On Good Friday evening, Temple Baptist Church, located at 300 Stratton Street in Covington, presented a moving live crucifixion scene that captivated attendees. This heart-rending portrayal aimed to bring the biblical account of Jesus' crucifixion to life, providing a powerful reminder of the significance of this day in history and the Christian faith.
The event took place from 6:30 p.m.—8:00 p.m. on April 3rd, drawing several residents who seemed humbled by the event, some of whom fell to their knees in prayer during the intimate portrayal. The church grounds were transformed to reflect the somber and sacred atmosphere of the Jesus' crucifixion.
The historic representations included Jesus, the two other men on the cross, Jesus' mother, Mary, two Roman guards, and several eyewitnesses. The entire event was accompanied by a carefully selected musical backdrop, adding an ominous feel to the already heart wrenching stage. It played a crucial role in enhancing the emotional impact of the scene, providing a haunting, yet beautiful accompaniment to the visual drama.
Following the scene, guests were treated to refreshments indoors before getting in their cars to head to their next destination. To close the experience, the church set up a display of Jesus' tomb, complete with the rolled-away stone, on the lawn as visitors exited the parking lot.
Temple Baptist Church has held this event for a great number of years and, as such, it has become a time-honored tradition for the residents of Covington, Virginia.
