Clifton Forge, VA (Apr. 3, 2026)— The Way of the Cross, a cherished annual event in Clifton Forge that draws the local Christian community together on Good Friday, bookending Holy Week, was held earlier today around 11:30 a.m. This solemn procession, typically arranged by Pastor Shorty Wolfe, commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and serves as a spiritual journey for participants, reminding them of Jesus' walk to Calvary.
The procession began at First Baptist Church, located at 910 Church Street, where Christians gathered and prepared for the walk to Central United Methodist Church on 414 Main Street. A group of devoted gentlemen, as in years past, carried a wooden cross, reminiscent of the one Jesus bore. This powerful symbol of faith and sacrifice serves as the focal point of the procession.
The participants then proceeded down Church Street before cutting over to Main for the remainder of the journey, singing familiar hymns such as "Because He Lives." Upon arrival at Central United Methodist, Pastor Grover Nicely said a few words after the cross was erected at the front of the church. His speech is currently available in its entirety on the Alleghany Journal website.
Afterwards, the group ventured inside for a sermon given by Pastor Teddy Bias of the First Assembly of God, located at 1610 Oak Hill Avenue in Clifton Forge. In following the annual traditions, the Celebration Choir, led by Choir Director Dale Muterspaugh, performed a few songs, concluding with their classic medley of "Sanctuary," "How Great is Our God," and "How Great Thou Art." | | Pastor Grover Nicely shared a few words following the erection of the cross.
