Covington Fire Chief Emphasizes Service, Tradition, and Community
| By Ashley Prior Staff Writer | Covington Va (March. 26, 2026) – The Journal recently interviewed newly elected Covington Fire Chief, C.W. Smith, who is known for his down-to-earth leadership style, to discuss his background, vision, and commitment to serving the community.
Smith, a dedicated public safety professional and family man, is married to his wife, Carissa, and their four children” Trey (19), Khiran (13), Kennedi (3), and Trinity (1 month). His commitment to both his family and his community plays a significant role in his approach to leadership and service.
He has been involved in the fire service since 2006, working his way through the ranks after starting as a lieutenant. Following a brief break in service, he returned to continue serving his community.
Outside of his role in the fire department, Smith remains actively involved locally. He coaches youth A league basketball, participates in outreach programs in Covington, and is a member of the Alleghany Dunbar Masonic Lodge in Roanoke.
“The fire department is built on pride, and pride is built within community,” Smith stated. The Covington Fire Department operates as a 100 percent volunteer organization, relying on individuals willing to serve their neighbors. Smith emphasized the importance of letting the community know the department is there for them and encouraged others to get involved.
New members can begin at the junior level of as associate members. Training included courses such as EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator Course) and driver/pump operations, with full membership typically requiring three to four months to complete.
Smith also highlighted the department’s partnership with the American Red Cross through the “Sound the Alarm” program, which promotes fire safety and preparedness throughout the community.
Above all, the priority is to ensure the safety of both his team and those they serve. “I have souls to bring home. If I go home, they’re going home,” Smith stated.
Smith remains committed to serving Covington and strengthening the department’s connection to the community.
