Covington City Council Meeting: Public Hearing Held, Dressler Provides Updates

Covington, Va (March. 10, 2026) – This evening the Journal joined the City of Covington for their monthly Council Meeting at City Hall that was held at 6:30 p.m.

The innovation was given by Pastor Dave Schmal with Grace Brethren Church.

The Public Hearing is regarding a Proposed Vacation of Public Right – Of - Way Rivermont Redevelopment Project. Mr. Eric Tyree spoke on the undeveloped alley way that passes through the existing Rivermont School property. There were no public comments, and council approved the Vacating of certain undeveloped public rights-of-way on the former Rivermont School property.

The regular meeting was called to order. There were no citizen comments, Mayor Forbes moved to the Proclamation. The Proclamation is designating April as clean up month in the Alleghany Highlands.

The council then moved to Ordinances where council voted and approved Vacating certain undeveloped public rights-of-way on the former Rivermont School property. Resolution R-26-07 where council voted and approved the VDEM grant funds for Delta Advanced 911 services (No City Match). Resolution R-26-08 where council voted and approved the Providing for Supplemental Appropriations in the General, Water, Sewer, and VDOT Sidewalk Funds.

There were no appointments. The Consent Agenda for the February work session and February council meeting minutes were approved.

City Manager Alan Dressler gave a brief report to the council. Dressler regarded the 124th Firehouse dinner Saturday night as a wonderful evening of fellowship and good food. “We take pride in the fact that we’ve got active members doing lifesaving for the Alleghany Highlands and serving the City of Covington.” Chief Baker has decided to take a step back, and C.W. Smith is our elected Fire Chief. “C.W. is a wonderful young man and is not hard to find.” Dressler touched base on the proposed budget with the Sheriff’s Department. “We will be working with the school this coming Friday to see where they’re at with their budget. BB and I are working with our department heads on their requesting budgets and I will say our department heads have done a nice job presenting their budgets to us.” Dressler gave a brief report on the sidewalk project on South Alleghany Avenue, the new locker rooms at Casey Field, restaurant week, and Restrooms open at Parks.

The Meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
