Clifton Forge, VA (Mar. 10, 2025)— It was a lengthy meeting on Tuesday night, March 10, for the Clifton Forge Town Council, whose session lasted about an hour and a half.

During the meeting, several action items were discussed and approved including: department reports, a proclamation declaring April as Clean-Up Month, the naming of Saturday, April 18, as the Clifton Forge Community Clean-Up Day, a resolution adopting the Hazard Mitigation Plan, a letter of Support for the reservoir grant, and an appointment to the Economic Development Authority to fill the vacant seat of Jason Helmintoller. Councilman Benjamin Nicely proposed that Ann Foster fill the seat, and the motion passed on a 4-1 vote. Foster is the co-owner of Jack Mason's Tavern & Brewery, alongside her husband, Michael Foster.

Several other action items were discussed and approved with regards to upcoming events such as a request from Alleghany Highlands Community Services to close Church Street between Jefferson and Commercial on March 28 from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m for the Developmental Services Awareness Festival, the CFMS request to close Church from Jefferson to Commercial on May 16 at 10:00 a.m. for the Triathlon event, and the CFMS request to close Roxbury to Ridgeway, including Commercial from Ridgeway to Main on April 4th from 10:45 a.m. until around noon for the Easter Bonnet/Hat Parade.

Additionally, Clifton Forge Town Manager Chuck Unroe read a brief letter from Robert Calloway Jones, who lives near Verge Street, requesting the purchase of three town lots currently priced at $1,000 each. Jones made a bid of $500 each for the properties, as they are adjacent to his lot, and he wishes to extend his yard. "These properties are vacant properties. They're wooded properties," Unroe stated Tuesday night. "They're really rough. They're steep, they're hard to access, and he said they are directly adjoining his properties." A public meeting will be held during next month's Clifton Forge Town Council Meeting to openly discuss the matter further.

David Elwood, who created Clifton Forge Parks & Trails, offered an update from Douthat Friends and AHTA, and Unroe gave his manager's comments toward the conclusion.

The Alleghany Journal was present to record the meeting in its entirety and that meeting is now available on our Alleghany Journal Facebook page.
