Clifton Forge, VA (Mar. 7, 2026)— It was lovely 62° this morning when the Alleghany Journal paid a quick visit to the Clifton Forge Fire House to visit with the nice folks at Immanuel Baptist Church. Our purpose was to catch a quick glimpse of their "Free Soup & Sandwiches" event held from 11:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m. for the public.
From the stairs outside, we caught the intoxicating aroma of various home-cooked soups just waiting for hungry guests to arrive. We were immediately greeted by Pastor Luke Benton who didn't hesitate to give us a brief tour inside. Awaiting us were nearly one dozen volunteers with big smiles on their faces.
The "Free Soup and Sandwiches" event began over a decade ago and continues to be a highly anticipated local occasion. Immanuel Baptist also has a food pantry that started in a small room in the church about 16 years ago.
Both food ministries are utilized to help the community. | | (L to R) Pastor Luke Benton and Associate Pastor Grant Lucas paused momentarily to pose in front of the Immanuel Baptist Church. Lucas had made a run to Scott Hill to pick up a few residents who may not have been able to come to the event otherwise.
