The Alleghany Journal was recently invited for a sneak peek into the choir's rehearsal of "The Phantom of the Opera" last week, and was privy to hear the titular song.

Covington, VA (Feb. 28, 2026)— Alleghany High School's (AHS) choir, led by Choir Director Amanda Sprouse, recently sat down with the Journal to discuss a really neat idea that will soon come to life on stage next month. Not only will the choir perform the entire musical of "Phantom of the Opera," but it will be set at the FCC Family Life Center over a three-course meal (snack options are also available), an interactive performance with the audience, and a dash of comedy.

According to Media Director Paisley Brooks, the preparation for "Phantom of the Opera" included lots of research and creativity. The cast even wrote their own script, seemingly as a way to enhance the story, allow for the interactive experience with the audience, and give them an opportunity to add a comedic feel to the classic story. "How do we want to do our take on this? Do we want to go a lot more seriously? Do we want to go a little more funny?" Paisley pondered about their creative process. "We did take the funny route."

Unlike previous performances, this one, as previously noted, will feature a full, homemade three-course meal. The first course is the appetizer in the form of a charcuterie board featuring two meats, two cheeses, pickles, olives, fruit, and spreads. The entree will be a delicious shepherd's pie with real potatoes, a salad with iceberg lettuce, chopped veggies, parmesan, and Olive Garden Italian dressing, with fresh artisan rolls and butter rosettes for the table. The final course is a decadent dessert: scratch-made red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Drinks served will be lemonade, iced tea (sweet or unsweet, and water.

The cost for this incredible meal (with interactive show included) is $45 for a single adult ticket or $80 for a couple. There is also a children's meal/ticket available for those 10 and under for $20, and a $20 snack ticket for those wanting a lighter option. The snack ticket features popcorn, pretzels, and Swedish meatballs, while the children's ticket showcases bow tie mac and cheese and other kid-friendly items. All children 3-under eat free.

There will be three shows beginning March 13th at 6:00 p.m., March 14th at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. All shows will be taking place at the FCC Family Life Center located at 231 E. Fudge Street in Covington.

According to Choir Director Amanda Sprouse, tickets are expected to sell out, so be sure to purchase yours early. You may do so by scanning the QR code on any of the flyers, including the ones currently featured on the Alleghany Journal Facebook page and website, or by calling 540-968-0963.

The Phantom looks forward to seeing you there!
