Iron Gate, VA (Feb. 27, 2026)— On Thursday, February 26, 2026, Iron Gate met for its regularly-scheduled monthly meeting. During said meeting, Mayor Kawahna Persinger gave her mayor's report, which included a segment where she spoke on a recent meeting of the Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Corporation (AHEDC). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ideas on how to obtain qualified individuals for local employment.
According to Persinger, the AHEDC met on February 17th at the county building and included representatives from Smurfit WestRock, Jackson River Technical Center (JRTC), and Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC). They "were all at that meeting to give their views of what the area would need to do to assist our employers in hiring and retaining qualified workers," Persinger stated. "And then on the flip side of that, what we can do to assist the job-seekers to come and remain employed in this area."
The entirety of the Iron Gate Town Council meeting was livestreamed by the Alleghany Journal and is currently available on our Facebook page. | | (l to r) Councilwoman Jennifer Tyree, Vice Mayor Christopher Mayo, Mayor Kawahna Persinger, and Councilwoman Norvella Burrell.
