AHPS Celebrating School Board Appreciation Month   Low Moor, VA (Feb. 20, 2026) - This February, Alleghany Highlands Public Schools is celebrating School Board Appreciation Month, joining communities across Virginia in honoring elected and appointed school board members who champion public education every day. The theme for this year, “From Strong Roots Come Endless Possibilities,” highlights the vital role board members play in supporting student success and ensuring every student has the resources and support to grow and thrive. “Our school board provides the guidance and governance that shape the student experience,” said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, AHPS leaders. “Their leadership is essential year-round, and February gives us a chance to recognize their dedication and impact.” AHPS Board members — Jon Lanford, chair; Jay Woodson, vice chair; Jonathan Arritt; John Littleton; Danielle Morgan; Bob Umstead; and Nicole Clemons — have significant responsibilities, including setting policies, evaluating programs, and making decisions on guidance for academic and operational matters. They manage a budget that directly supports students and staff in our local schools, helping to create an environment where learning can flourish. “These individuals make decisions that influence our schools and the broader community,” added Halterman and Snead-Johnson. “School boards across the commonwealth support millions of students and uphold the important pillar of our democracy: public education.” In March, Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will honor its board with tokens of appreciation from Covington Middle School.  The local schools take turns making gifts for school board members.  This year, work has been delayed by weather closures.
