Historic Douthat Lodge Reopens Following Major Renovations

Millboro, VA (Feb. 12, 2026) - Douthat State Park’s historic mountain top lodge will reopen in the spring of 2026, marking the completion of an extensive, multi-year renovation project aimed at preserving the park’s treasured Civilian Conservation Corps-era accommodations.

Originally built in the 1930s by the CCC, the Douthat Lodge now features modern amenities while preserving the historic character that defines these iconic structures. The project team included Greg Holzgrefe, project manager with DCR Design and Construction, Tim Colley of Colley Architects in Blacksburg and Jay Gauldin of TBS Construction in Moneta.

Exterior renovations focused on repairing the historic logs and masonry, along with restoring original windows and shutters. Inside, the team modernized mechanical and electrical systems while preserving character through intricate woodwork repairs, including the careful removal and reuse of wide plank tongue-and-groove paneling. Where restoration wasn’t possible, new hardwood flooring was installed to maintain a cohesive look.

The kitchen and bathrooms received significant upgrades, featuring granite countertops, porcelain tile, stainless-steel appliances and modern fixtures. After construction, the lodge was furnished with new furniture designed to complement the revitalized spaces.

“Douthat Lodge is more than just a building, it’s a part of Virginia’s history,” said Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Director Nikki Rovner. “This renovation reflects our commitment to preserving that legacy while ensuring all visitors can enjoy these special places.”

The lodge renovation was the final phase in a three-part project to upgrade the CCC-built cabins and lodge facilities at Douthat. The work included updating more than 30 cabins, using environmentally friendly materials and techniques to highlight original stonework, log walls and design elements.

“We peeled back layers to reveal the craftsmanship of the CCC and worked to enhance it without erasing it,” said DCR Planning and Recreation Resources Director Kelly McClary. “It’s a rare opportunity to give new life to structures that tell such an important story about our parks and the people who built them.”

The renovated lodge and cabins are available for reservations, offering an ideal retreat for families, reunions and outdoor enthusiasts. The lodge’s reopening is a key step forward in DCR’s long-term vision as we near the Virginia State Park’s 100th anniversary in 2036 to modernize infrastructure while honoring its heritage.

“Our visitors love the history they find here, and now they’ll be able to experience it more fully,” said Virginia State Parks Assistant Director of Operations Dave Collett. “We’re excited to welcome guests back to a lodge that’s not only beautiful but built to last for generations to come.”
