Covington, VA (Jan. 13, 2026) – The City of Covington held their work session, and joint Public Hearing with the Planning Commission on the evening of Tuesday January 13th. The joint public hearing with planning commission discussed a Special Exception Permit for expansion of a non-conforming structure.

According to the Agenda, “Mrs. Baker is requesting a Special Exception Permit to allow a freestanding structure that was installed as a replacement for a former front awning prior to receiving approval.” There were some concerns on what is needed to be done to make the structure legal. In addition, Planning Commission and City Council approved the Special Exception Permit.

City Manager Alan Dressler updates City Council on several things beginning with the Highlands being under a drought advisory. Mr. Dressler thanked everyone for their involvement with the programs and holiday events especially on the cold nights. City Manager Dressler touched base on the Rivermont Facility that will hopefully begin in March.

He added, “The Rayon bridge should be fully opened now.” “It is a safe bridge, it is a 6-ton limit to cross the bridge,” Mr. Dressler added. “The sidewalk project on S. Alleghany Ave is moving along very well,” he said. The Christmas decorations have begun to be taken down throughout the town. Dressler concluded, “I am very pleased with the staff and the direction we are heading.”
