Covington, VA (Nov. 13, 2025)— This afternoon, the Journal learned that a "Diaper & Formula Drive" —the first drive of its kind— has arrived in Alleghany County. According to Amanda Skidmore, founder of the revolutionary project, the drive will be conducted at Parrish Court United Methodist Church, located at 2343 South Carpenter Drive in Covington.

The intention is to provide parents with diapers, wipes, and formula for their babies that they may not be able to afford otherwise due to the government shutdown, rising costs, or other unspecified reasons. Skidmore stated Thursday afternoon that the idea came to her after realizing some mothers go looking for

these types of resources, but often have doors shut in their faces.

The drive is expected to be available for those in need, hopefully, by next week. Upon its opening, there will be a box set up outside of Parrish Court for those needing diapers, wipes, or formula. One would simply show up on Tuesday or Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m., call the church, and receive the needed supplies. A lock will be on the box otherwise to protect it from the elements.

In the future, there will be boxes available at Alleghany Regional Library, located at 406 W. Riverside Street in Covington, and at the YMCA. Both locations have already been approved by both Lisa Sponaugle (Library Director at Alleghany Regional Library) and Bobbie Wagner (CEO of the YMCA).

For those wishing to donate to the project, Parrish Court United Methodist is accepting diaper donations sized preemie to adult, baby wipes, formula of all types, and monetary donations. Please call the church at 540-962-1036 to arrange a time to drop off your donation. The same number may be used by recipients of these resources at the time of pickup.
