| CMS 'Veterans Day Program' Features 100-Year-Old WWII Navy Veteran
| By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Covington, VA (Nov. 10, 2025)— It was a very special day today at Covington Middle School (CMS) when a 100-year-old Navy veteran by the name of Marion Noel graced the stage during their "Veterans Day Program." Noel sat in a navy blue chair and answered several questions from the students. He also went into great detail about how he voluntarily signed up for the Navy at the tender age of 17, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Pearl Harbor, of course, was the single event that launched the U.S. into World War II; a war that —u p until that point — the United States had remained neutral on.
Apart from Noel's stories about his own life and time served in the military, the program also featured several video presentations, a speech about the Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW) from veteran Bill Atherholt, a reading of the popular "Flander's Field" poem, a reading about why red poppies are significant to our men and women in service, and the folding of the American flag.
At the close of the program, red poppies were handed out to everyone in attendance.
