Clifton Forge, VA (Nov. 7, 2025)— This afternoon, the Journal learned that Mildred McCabe, a lifelong resident of Covington, made a sizeable donation to Mountain Gateway Community College's (MGCC) Educational Foundation to the tune of about $800,000. McCabe passed away on September 5th of this year at the ripe age of 101. During her lifetime, she never attended but, as Bruce Loving —MGCC Educational Foundation Executive Director— noted on Friday afternoon, she clearly saw the benefit of giving a portion of her estate away to further the education of local students.

The Journal was on-hand for Mountain Gateway's annual "Educational Foundation Donor-Scholar Reception" this afternoon from 3:00 p.m.—4:30 p.m. where the announcement of McCabe's generosity was announced. The event also included an opportunity for the donors and scholar recipients to have something of a meet-and-greet as well as dine together and hear a few speeches. Those speaking were Loving; MGCC President, Dr. John Rainone; Lois Switzer, president of the MGCC Educational Foundation Board; Bill Wilson, Covington attorney; and Ezekiel Downey, student representative.

Mountain Field Market catered the event.
