Drug Take Back Day: More Than 206 Pounds Collected   Covington, VA (Oct. 27, 2025) - (Editor's note: the following is a news release from Alleghany County/Covington Sheriff Kyle Moore.) "On October 25, 2025 members of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office and Regional Jail participated in Operation Drug Take Back. This program is designed to allow members of the community to bring unused or expired medications to our drop off points and discard of the medications. This program was founded by the DEA and is geared towards reducing the amount of prescription medications that are on our streets. "This year 206.6 pounds were collected and turned into the Roanoke DEA office. From there it will be destroyed. Sgt. George Jefferson coordinates this program each year and is responsible for making this event possible each year along with the Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board and Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital. "If you were unable to make it to the drop off, you can still stop by the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office and drop off the medications in our drop box. The box has a drawer that you can place the drugs in and dump them into the storage area.
