MGCC Concludes 3-Day 'Freshman Orientation' with Presentation, Party, and Many Activities
| By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Clifton Forge, VA (Aug. 22, 2025)— For freshman entering Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC), it's been a long, but informative three days. After spending two days in a classroom setting in SDV 100 (Student Development) learning the ins and outs of college life, all freshmen were required to participate in today's event which included an hour-long presentation, several activities, and a party.
There were several speakers at the Moomaw Center during the event which took place from 9:00 a.m. to 10 a.m. Among those were MGCC President, Dr. John Rainone and Vice President of Student Affairs, Suzanne Ostling. Both welcomed the freshmen and spoke on what to expect from both their collegiate journeys, as well as the day's activities.
Among the activities were a BINGO game and graded Scavenger Hunt. The BINGO game was designed to encourage students to begin getting to know their pers. It had questions like "Has seen a ghost?", "Is a vegetarian or vegan?", and "Loves comic books?" Players had to ask around and fill in the names of the people around them who could answer "yes" to one of the questions. To win, as in regular BINGO, one had to get 5-in-a-row by filling out a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line.
The graded Scavenger Hunt was designed to familiarize students with the buildings such as Backles Hall, Warren Hall, and the Moomaw Center. They were also required to find their way to Student Services, Scott Hall, locate the Achievement Center, visit a community resource table, and talk to staff members.
Concluding the event was a party held at the Moomaw Center where drinks, chips, and hot dogs were served. | | | |
