Iron Gate, Covington Residents Die After Truck Wreck In Augusta County

| Augusta County, VA (July 22, 2025) - The Virginia State Police reported that two people were killed on I-64 after their truck went off the road in the morning on July 22, 2025, in Augusta County.
A 2026 Freightliner crash truck, used for worker protection and motorists in highway work zones, was eastbound on I-64. At mile market 89, about 6:19 a.m., the VSP said the driver overcorrected, causing the truck to veer off the right side of the interstate.
The truck went through a guardrail, down an embankment, struck a tree, and overturned on its side.
The driver, Georgeanna L. Hardesty, 51, of Iron Gate, and the passenger, Sabrina L. Harris, 50, of Covington, were killed. Both were wearing seatbelts, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation.
