'Teen Week' Returns
Five Nights of Fun, Faith, and Free Activities for Local Teens

Covington, VA (July 24, 2025)β€” Get ready, Alleghany! "Teen Week" is back in Covington and this year is beginning to look like its best yet, bringing five exciting nights packed with fun, faith, and free activities designed specifically for our local teenagers.

For those unfamiliar with "Teen Week," it is an event believed to have started either in 1978 or '79 at Covington Bible Church when Howard Merrell was Pastor. Since then, it has grown to include three other churches β€”Faith Baptist Church, Grace Brethren Church, and First Christian Churchβ€” all of whom generously sponsor the event, making it free for all local teens.

The Alleghany Journal reached out to Nicolas Lomasney, one of the main organizers of the event and member of Covington Bible Church, who shared a plethora of information regarding "Teen Week." "It's like Vacation Bible School for teenagers, on steroids," Lomasney joked. "The good steroids though. Not the bad ones."

"Teen Week" is for those going into seventh grade and cuts off at those who just graduated high school. It features a different event and location each night with all activities free of charge, dinner is served, there is a coffee bar, an Icee Stand, a message designed to educate attendees about the living God, a breakout time, and is not limited to those who have a home church, but to all teenagers. "Well over half of the attendees don't go to church anywhere," Lomasney stated, "so it's not limited to youth group kids, but is open to all kids."

This is what we know of this year's schedule and planned activities:

Sunday, July 27β€” Held at Intervale Boat Launch from 2 p.m.β€”8 p.m, with registration running from 2-3 and activities to follow. Activities include a giant water slide set up by the fire department, water games, make your own cardboard boat, tubing the river, Nine Square, Gaga, and more. Teens should bring a towel and change of clothes.

Monday, July 28β€” Held at First Christian Church, located at 231 E. Fudge Street in Covington from 6 p.m.β€”10 p.m. Activities include a silent disco, a live-action Mario Kart race, and life-sized arcade games.

Tuesday, July 29β€” Held at Mountain Rush, located at 410 W. Main Street in Covington from 6 p.m.β€”10 p.m. Activities include virtual reality, laser tag, marshmallow homerun derby, and a blind obstacle course.

Wednesday, July 30β€” Held at Covington Bible Church, located at 2140 S. Carpenter Drive in Covington from 6 p.m.β€”10 p.m. On this night, teens can expect a live concert from Christian Recording Artist, Humble Tip, and sing along to "Karaoke Jeopardy."

Thursday, July 31β€” Held at Covington City Pool, located at 708 Main Street in Covington from 6 p.m.β€”10 p.m. There will be a pool party from 6:30 p.m.β€”8:30 p.m. with specialty drinks, a rally, and speaker to follow. According to Lomasney, there will also be a cookout on this, their final night of "Teen Week."

We asked Nicolas Lomasney what the purpose was for the event that has spanned over four decades now. He stated, "The purpose is twofold. Of course, the overall purpose is that we're trying to share who Jesus is with the teens in our community, but we also want to give them a place where they can come and participate in some fun activities where it won't cost them anything."
