Honoring Dee Dee Simpson First Annual 'Surviving and Giving Back' Car Show Drives Hope and Support for Cancer Fighters | By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Covington, VA (June 28, 2025)— Dee Dee Simpson's fighting spirit and dedication to supporting cancer fighters have inspired a powerful community movement. In her honor, the first annual "Surviving and Giving Back" Car Show was launched today at the Jackson River Sports Complex, located at 870 W. Edgemont Drive in Covington. The show was held from 2 p.m.—6 p.m. today, with registration beginning at 1 p.m. for all participating vehicles.
As for Dee Dee Simpson, she was more than a beloved member of the Alleghany Highlands— she was a beacon of strength, compassion, and resilience. In 2013, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer at the tender age of 30. Rather than focus on herself, Dee Dee fought tirelessly to build "Surviving and Giving Back"— a local nonprofit who raises awareness on various cancers and assists those fighting the good fight. For seven long years, Dee Dee fought her own fight, enduring immense pain before her body finally succumbed to cancer. During those years of fighting, she selflessly continued to help others through her nonprofit.
Today's uplifting event honored that legacy. It brought together car enthusiasts, survivors, and advocates for a day filled with hope, solidarity, and generosity. It not only celebrated Dee Dee's story, but also raised awareness and funds to aid those battling cancer right here in our community.
It featured all types of cars including trucks, tractors, motorcycles, and, of course, unique cars. There was also entertainment, vendors, raffles, a 50/50, and auctions. All proceeds went right back into the community to help others who are fighting battles similar to Dee Dee's.
Today's first annual "Surviving and Giving Back" Car Show celebrated Dee Dee's lasting memory while also serving as a powerful platform to raise awareness, support cancer fighters, and foster a community drawn together for the same purpose of helping others fight the good fight. Through this car show, Dee Dee's spirit lives on, inspiring others to persevere and make a difference in the fight against cancer.
