Iron Gate Town Council Sees Growing Government Body Ashley Prior Reappointed as Town Clerk, Christopher Mayo Joins Council | By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Iron Gate, VA (May 29, 2025)— This evening, in a significant development for the Iron Gate community, the Town Council underwent important changes that are sure to shape the town's future. The most noteworthy changes are the reappointment of Ashley Prior and newcomer Christopher Mayo who, tonight, was unanimously voted to fill the vacant seat left by former Vice-Mayor Richard Erskine.
As many residents are aware, Prior read a letter of resignation during last month's regularly scheduled town council meeting. At tonight's meeting, however, she read a second letter that stated her desire to rescind the former letter and be reappointed to her position as Town Clerk. According to Prior, this decision came after much reflection.
Council then proposed to accept Ashley Prior's request to rescind her former resignation and desire to be reappointed. Unanimously, it was voted to accept Prior's request and so, the town clerk was reappointed to her former position.
Sometime after, Mayor Kawahna Persinger read a letter from new town resident, Christopher Mayo, who noted moving to the town last year and keeping up with Iron Gate business via the Alleghany Journal's YouTube channel located here: https://www.youtube.com/@AlleghanyJournal.
According to Mayo, he read about the vacant seat —left by former Vice-Mayor Richard Erskine— on the back of his water bill and had a desire to fill it. After reading his letter of request, it was put to vote. Unanimously, Christopher Mayo was voted onto council and will fill the vacant seat left by Erskine.
The Journal will have more on this, as well as Persinger's mayor report, and more coming up soon on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. | | Mayor Kawahna Persinger
