Covington, VA (May 23, 2025)— Nearly 100 students were on today's program —99 to be exact— who were set to be capped at this year's second annual "Capping Ceremony," held at 1:30 this afternoon in the Alleghany High School (AHS) auditorium. We counted only seven who were not in attendance.
The "Capping Ceremony" was brought to Alleghany High School as part of the consolidation with Covington High School (CHS). At CHS, the "Capping Ceremony" was a timeless and honored tradition which was affectionately transferred alongside the students post-consolidation.
As the beloved tradition goes, seniors lie in wait in the auditorium for their names to be called, then march to the stage where they are officially "capped" by a schoolmate, sibling, or member of faculty. It is a symbolic gesture meant to signify the oncoming graduation which is currently scheduled for next Friday.
In addition to the capping ceremony, many other awards were given out in several "Most likely to..." categories. Those awards include, but are not limited to: "Most likely to replace Mr. Cantrell [school principal]," won by Laken Cantrell (Cantrell's daughter) and Gabriel Booze; "Most likely to become an olympian," won by Chase DePriest and Nick Frye; "Most likely to appear on a reality TV show," won by Josh Anglin and Addyson Burkholder; and "Most likely to write a #1 hit song," won by Ezekiel Downey and Ella Hicks. Incidentally, Ezekiel Downey and Ella Hicks also took home the most prestigious award of the day: Mr. and Miss AHS. | | Dylan Stull was capped by Katie Stull during today's event.
