Clifton Forge, VA (May 3, 2025) — Fishing has long been cherished as a peaceful escape and a way for man to connect with nature. However, for individuals with disabilities, access to this beloved pastime can often be limiting. That's where "Fishing With Angels" steps in—a remarkable initiative dedicated to bringing joy, inclusion, and a strong sense of community to anglers with disabilities in the Alleghany Highlands. By providing adaptive equipment, supportive volunteers, and specially designed fishing experiences, this event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, opens the door for everyone to enjoy the thrill of the catch and the tranquility of the great outdoors.
"Fishing With Angels" is a unique event organized by William and Holly Nicely with the help of numerous volunteers, including William's daughter, Misti McGuffey. The four-hour-long event included free lunch provided by the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad who served drinks, hot dogs, and potato chips. Meanwhile, the Jackson River behind "Clifton Forge School of the Arts" was stocked with 900 rainbow trout which were provided by Engleside Dairy. The person with the largest catch was then awarded the Carly Simmons award in loving memory of the beautiful, red-haired girl who gained her wings in 2017.
"Fishing With Angels" is more than an annual event—it's a heartfelt mission dedicated to bringing joy, connection, and a sense of belonging to anglers with disabilities in the Alleghany Highlands. Founded on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the tranquility and excitement of fishing, this inspiring group creates inclusive outdoor experiences that break down barriers and foster community. Through patient guidance, adaptive equipment, and compassionate support, "Fishing With Angels" empowers individuals with disabilities to embrace the water, forge new friendships, and rediscover the simple pleasures of casting a line in the crystal clear waters of the Jackson River. | | William and Holly Nicely organize the annual event which typically draws a large crowd of anglers.
