| Low Moor, VA (Sept. 17, 2024) - Teresa “Tracy” Persinger has been appointed Supervisor of Finance for Alleghany Highlands Public Schools. Her appointment becomes effective Oct. 1.
The AHPS School Board approved Persinger’s appointment during its regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 16.
Persinger is a veteran employee of local government and school divisions. She was employed by the City of Covington for 25 years, serving in the treasurer’s office for seven years. Over the past five years, she has worked in public schools' central offices.
She was a payroll clerk for Covington City Schools and became an Alleghany Highlands Public Schools employee in July 2022. AHPS was created by merging Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. Persinger serves as an administrative assistant to health and financial services and division support with AHPS.Â
“We are fortunate to have Ms. Persinger’s hands-on experience in finance departments, helping us in this period of transition and look forward to her continued hard work in Alleghany Highlands Public Schools,” said Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS. Â
The school division’s supervisor of finance completes many important tasks including guiding the school board’s budget development process. This work is complex and requires knowledge of federal, state, and local funding sources. The school division’s finance office also handles employee contracts and benefits.
“In her new role, Ms. Persinger will work alongside us as we help to ensure student and staff needs are met wisely with available resources,” said Halterman and Snead-Johnson.
Persinger is a graduate of Covington High School and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (now Mountain Gateway Community College), graduating with an associate’s degree in business management. Â
“I am excited to accept the position of finance supervisor. I believe my work experience has prepared me to embrace this new role. I look forward to working with the staff as I start this new journey. We have an experienced staff, and I am confident we will work as a team,” Persinger said.Â
She is the daughter of James and Patty Crosier of Covington and the mother of Dylan and Cristi Persinger. She enjoys being outdoors, walking, camping, and going to the beach. Persinger also attends First Christian Church in Covington, where she serves as a pianist.Â
At its Sept. 16 regular meeting, the Alleghany Highlands School Board honored outgoing Director of Finance Rebecca Irvine with a special resolution. Irvine will retire on Sept. 30. She has been a long-time leader in Covington City Public Schools and Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.
In 2022, Irvine and Keven Rice, the former director of finance for Alleghany County Public Schools, worked diligently to oversee several complex financial details to ensure a seamless transition to Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.
“We are so impressed with the dedication of our entire finance team in shepherding the consolidation process,” said Halterman and Snead-Johnson. “We have learned much from our former finance directors, we have enjoyed working alongside them, and we wish them all the best in retirement.”
AHPS serves approximately 2,700 students. The school division is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington.
