'Give 'Em Hell, Harry' Set For CMS May 19th

Covington, VA (May 7, 2024) - It’s 1945, and America’s beloved Franklin Roosevelt has unexpectedly died in office.

His Vice President, Harry Truman, the son of a mule farmer from Missouri, was thrust into leadership of our country during one of its most turbulent eras. Truman was mocked by the press and public, but by the time he left office seven years later, Truman had earned worldwide praise as one of the great leaders of the 20th century.

Later this month, Fred Grandy, a former US Congressman and actor most famous for his role as Gopher on The Love Boat, will portray our 33rd President in a one-person show titled, “Give Em Hell, Harry” presented by the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council in a matinee performance on Sunday afternoon, May 19 at Curfman Hall in Covington Middle School.

Since its debut in 1975, Samuel Gallu’s play tells the inspiring story of how Truman's gentle wit and straightforward wisdom successfully led the country through one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

Mr. Grandy has performed this role across the United States. His fellow Love Boat cast member Ted Lange has directed this production and will join him at Curfman Hall for an audience Q&A after the final curtain. Audiences will remember Lange as Isaac, the Bartender, on the show.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from the Arts Council’s website, Arts4AllAlleghanyHighlands.com, or at the door. Through assistance from corporate co-sponsor Highlands Community Bank and the Alleghany Foundation, high school history students will attend the matinee free of charge, and middle schoolers will see an abridged version the following morning.

For more information, call the Arts Council at 540-962-ARTS (2787)
