'Compass For Life': Shelter For Those With A Second Chance   Covington, VA (March 28, 2024) - Compass For Life, a new homeless shelter, houses individuals formally incarcerated who are trying to create a new life change for themselves and to not go back to jail/prison. "We were blessed enough to obtain our first grant from the Alleghany Foundation that provided two new roofs, new windows, and paid for a sewage/waterleak," problem said Kristi Dressler, founder of the operation. "It's very expensive to run these houses and we accept donations and create fundraisers that sustain "Compass For Life." We have a bake-sale coming up this Saturday in front of T-Mobile. We will be selling Butter Braids in April and hope to have an auction soon for items that have been donated," she noted. "We are hoping to obtain grants shortly, that will help employee staff. We are located in Covington at 124 and 126 Lexington Avenue and currently have six residents." These residents are responsible for chores, attending groups, are randomly drug tested, have surveillance cameras, and have curfews. Residents also have volunteered to speak at groups, and churches to educate individuals on what Compass For Life is. "We are changing households one family at a time, where individuals are obtaining jobs, attending recovery groups, volunteering, forming bonds with current residents, attending church, moving into their own housing, and regaining custody of their children," she said.
