'Memory Café' Offers Social Gathering for People Dealing with Dementia

Covington, VA (March 26, 2024) - Dr. Elizabeth MacDougall, a Dementia Friends Champion, will offer a new senior program called Memory Café on Saturday, April 13. The session will be held from 10 a.m. until noon in the Fellowship Hall at Edgemont ARP Church.
A memory café is an informal social gathering for those affected by memory loss and their care partners and supporters. These café sessions will continue the work that Dr. MacDougall began with a Dementia Friends Information Session held in November 2023. Church members will assist in offering conversation, music, and activities for persons with memory loss, as well as their caregivers and friends. Snacks and drinks will be served.
Dementia Friends is a global movement striving to create more dementia-friendly communities by changing how people think, act, and talk about dementia. Developed by the Alzheimer's Society in the United Kingdom, Dementia Friends is underway in Virginia and across the United States. By helping everyone in a community understand what dementia is and how it affects people, each of us can make a difference for someone living with dementia.
Dr. MacDougall holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She graduated with an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Geneva College and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland. She is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Student Research at Bridgewater College. She previously worked at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, where she also maintained a geriatric neuropsychology consulting practice.
