Childhood Development Screenings Set for Wednesday, Feb. 21

Low Moor, VA (Feb. 8, 2024) - The Alleghany Preschool Providers for Early Childhood Education Services will offer free childhood development screenings on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in cooperation with Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.

The screenings are open to children born after Dec. 31, 2019, and residing in the Alleghany Highlands. The screenings will be by appointment only and examine motor, communication, problem-solving, and personal/social skills.

The screenings will help determine if a child would benefit from early childhood education services, such as classroom interventions, speech therapy, and physical and/or occupational therapy. Parents concerned about their child's development are asked to consider bringing them to the screenings.

To schedule an appointment for:

— Students who would attend Mountain View Elementary School and Sharon Elementary School, contact Carrainea Kaebisch at (540) 863-1737

— Students who would attend Jeter-Watson Elementary School and Callaghan Elementary School, contact Amanda Burns at (540) 965-1420

Appointments for screening children from birth to age three can be made by contacting Rachel Meyers at the Infant Toddler Connection, (540) 863-1620, ext. 107. Those screenings will also be conducted on Feb. 21.

Parents with additional questions about children ages 3-4 should contact Corrainea Kaebisch at (540) 863-1737 or Dr. Jason Conaway, Director of Special Education for AHPS, at (540) 863-1809.

If, at any point during the year, a parent of a young child suspects that their child may have a developmental need, the parent should feel free to reach out to Infant Toddler Connection and/or the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Special Education Department.

In the case of inclement weather, the screenings will be rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Other programs for young children are also available. Parents interested in the Virginia Preschool Initiative Program may apply online for their child by visiting www.smart2school.org. The application will be used to determine a child’s eligibility.   As a reminder, AHPS is also hosting kindergarten registration on Feb. 20.
