Alleghany Highlands Dolphin Swim Team Preparing For 2023-24 Season

| Low Moor, VA (Sept. 28, 2023) - After an exciting and successful season last year, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA Dolphins swim team is preparing for the upcoming 2023-24 season, and new team members are welcomed.
YMCA aquatics director Trevor Barron and Dolphins head coach Shari Peterson are recruiting new team members, but there are several prerequisites these new team members must achieve. Prospective Dolphins are required to swim the length of the pool in freestyle with proper breathing. They must also swim the length of the pool on their back — no stroke required — and tread water for one minute.
“We welcome any new members, and we’re excited about past Dolphin team members joining us again in 2023-24,” Peterson said.
Last season closed with a bang as 18 Dolphins competed in the eight-team PYSA (Piedmont YMCA Swim Association) meet in March at the Salem YMCA. The Alleghany Highlands YMCA swim team was one of the smallest in the field but placed fourth overall and first out of the small teams, and two Dolphins — Riley Persinger and Jack Shull — qualified for the URSY Regional Meet in Spartanburg, S.C.
At the regional meet, Shull swam in both the 200-IM and the 50-backstroke, recording personal bests in both events, while Persinger swam in the 100-backstroke and the 50-freestyle, also recording personal bests in both events.
Riley is a ninth grader at James River High School, where she also runs cross country. She is the daughter of Daniel and Beth Persinger of Clifton Forge. Jack is a sixth grader at Covington Middle School. He also participates in cross country. Jack is the son of Richard and Tiffany Shull of Covington.
“We are extremely proud of both swimmers,” Peterson said. “We’re looking forward to big things from them again this year and from all our Dolphin swimmers.”
The Alleghany Highlands YMCA Dolphins winter swim season begins in early October and continues into March. Children ages 5 through 19 can participate but must pass the swim prerequisites to participate. Anyone interested in joining the Dolphins is encouraged to call Barron at (540) 862-8679.
Since its inception, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA has provided a variety of youth and family programs along with expanded memberships and services into all of the Alleghany Highlands communities. For more information on the Alleghany Highlands YMCA, call (540) 962-9622.
