YMCA's Michael May Honored By Leadership Award

Low Moor, VA (May 15, 2023) - Michael May, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA’s Health and Wellness director and personal trainer, has received a 2023 Cause Driven Leadership award from the YMCA's Professional Network.
May was presented this prestigious award during the recent 2023 YMCA YPN Chapter 25 Spring Conference in Charlottesville. He is the first employee of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA to receive this honor.
His nomination read in apart that May "is like the many mission-driven leaders of small Y's across the nation who juggle multiple projects to lead their organization's efforts of meeting the wide-ranging needs of their communities."
May started as an intern at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA in the spring of 2021. Shortly thereafter, he accepted the position of Health and Wellness director. He currently works with over 10 YMCA patrons on personal training, improving their health and overall wellness. He is certified as a personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
“Michael continues to positively impact the health and wellness of his clients, and he is a tremendous asset to our organization,” said Alleghany Highlands YMCA CEO Jennifer Unroe. “We congratulate Michael on this significant accomplishment as he continues to serve the YMCA, his clients and the Alleghany Highlands community.”
May is a long-time resident of the Alleghany Highlands and a graduate of Alleghany High School. He previously worked as a chef at The Omni Homestead in Hot Springs. Michael and his wife, Catherine Dougherty, reside in the Callaghan area of Alleghany County. The couple was married in October 2022.
“I am humbled and extremely honored to receive this award,” May said. “I value my time working with my many wonderful clients and hopefully improving the overall wellness of our community.”
