Senior Law Day Set August 10, 2022 At MGCC

Covington, VA (July 5, 2022) - At a recent meeting of the Alleghany-Bath Highland Bar Association (ABH Bar), a decision was made to host another Senior Law Day (SLD) on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at the Mountain Gateway Community College (the former Dabney S. Lancaster Community College).

The last SLD program promoted by the ABH Bar was in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the bar from having subsequent programs. The past SLD programs have received rave reviews from both seniors and the community at large.

Plans calls for a panel of attorneys, and others, who will inform seniors and their caregivers about issues important to them. Dr. John Rainone, President of the college, will welcome everyone to the college and Stephanie Grana, President of the Virginia State Bar (VSB), will introduce the program. Attorney Bill Wilson will serve as moderator for the panel.

At the noon break, a free lunch will be provided for those in attendance.

The VSB will provide “Senior Citizens Handbooks” for the group, along with other materials helpful to seniors.

In 2019, the program was videoed and put on the VSB website for the benefit of other bar associations and anyone else who would benefit.

The organizational committee for the ABH Bar is made up of attorneys Jeanne M. Hepler, Bill Parks, Kristen McConnell and Bill Wilson. They are being assisted by Patrice Jefferson, Director of the League of Older Americans, Pastors Nathan Miller, Johnny Mize, Steve Noel and Bill Hartsfield. The Pastors are helping to get seniors registered and down to the meeting. Seniors and their caregivers should call 540-962-4529 to register so the organizers can determine how much lunch will be necessary.

Various businesses will be sponsors of the program and will be recognized in the printed program, as well as in news releases and banners placed at the college.

Commenting on the program, Taylor Baker, President of the ABH Bar, said, “I think that the Senior Law Day program provides an invaluable and informative program benefiting all those that attend but especially our older citizens. We are so happy to be able to once again provide this program after two years of absence.”
