Education Community Shows Outpouring Of Support

| Low Moor, VA (March 18, 2022) - Students and educators throughout the Alleghany Highlands displayed an outpouring of support for law enforcement officers and first responders on Friday, March 18, by donning blue and black.
The education community also used “Blue and Black Day” as a way of extending its condolences to the family of fallen Covington Police Officer Caleb D. Ogilvie.
Officer Ogilvie was killed Monday, March 14, while responding to a call for assistance from a local business. He was 35 years old. His funeral service will be held Saturday, March 19, at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.
Many of the staff members and students in Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, Rivermont School-Alleghany Highlands, and the Shenandoah Autism Center all participated in “Blue and Black Day.” on Friday. Employees at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College also participated. The students at DSLCC were on break.
“We are so sorry for these tragic events affecting our community, and we hope this simple gesture has provided some small means of healing,” Superintendent Kim Halterman of Alleghany County Public Schools and Superintendent Melinda Snead-Johnson of Covington City Public Schools said in a joint statement. Â
Officer Ogilvie joined the Covington Division of Police last fall. He served for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, with two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prior to coming to the Alleghany Highlands, he was a volunteer with Roanoke County Fire and Rescue from 2011 to 2016.Â
