Library Purchases ScanPro Microfilm Scanner

Clifton Forge, VA (Sept. 9, 2017) - Library Director Mike Barnes is pleased to announce that the Clifton Forge Public Library has acquired a new ScanPro Microfilm Scanner. The ScanPro has the capability of not only reading the film, but also enhancing it by enlarging the print, adjusting the brightness, and cropping. The cropped portion can be printed out or scanned to an e-mail address.

The library’s film file includes Clifton Forge’s “The Daily Review” from 1898-1988; the “Alleghany County Clerk of Circuit Court” from 1879-1897; and, the “Covington Virginian” which later became the “Virginian Review” from 1988-June 2012.

“These are great resources for area residents for historical events in Clifton Forge and surrounding areas,” says Clifton Forge resident, John Strott. “I encouraged the town to purchase the new system because it’s an essential piece of equipment for a library and now that you have it, people can use it.”

Originally linked to a standard computer monitor, Mr. Strott returned shortly after examining the ScanPro with a large-screen television monitor that he thoughtfully donated to allow for easier reading by the patrons.

“I have done research using the old film reader for the Masonic and their advertising,” Mr. Strott said. “When I bought my house in Clifton Forge, I looked up the person who was the previous owner. He was a doctor – Dr. William Revercomb – so anybody doing genealogical research might find information in the obituaries which is where I learned about Dr. Revercomb, or potentially in other articles about their Clifton Forge ancestors.”

Mr. Strott continued, “From time to time, especially on rainy days and in the winter, I plan to use the new film reader doing more research on the Masonic for a couple hours a day, before my eyes glaze over.”

The ScanPro Microfilm Scanner is available for public use during normal operating hours. The library is open on Monday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

The Clifton Forge Public Library is located at 535 Church Street. For information on any library activity or program, call 863-2519.
