BROWN BAG BOOK CLUB TO MEET MAY 18

Clifton Forge, VA (May 12, 2017) - The Clifton Forge Public Library’s Brown Bag Book Club will meet on Thursday, May 18.
  
The group will discuss Ross King’s Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies. “Mad Enchantment tells the full story behind the creation of the Water Lilies, as the horrors of World War I came ever closer to Paris and Giverny, and a new generation of younger artists, led by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, were challenging the achievements of Impressionism.”
Donna Seaman, writing for “Booklist”, says that the story of Monet’s struggles and triumphs in the last dozen years of his life has been written with “a historical novelist’s attunement to the interplay of place, temperament, and society … Never before has the full drama and significance of Monet’s magnificent Water Lilies been conveyed with such knowledge and perception, empathy and wonder.”
“Kirkus” hails King’s book as one that “elegantly reveals the soul of a great artist, the last impressionist standing at the end of one of history's most remarkable art movements.” Christopher Sullivan, reviewing for “The Associated Press”, lauds King as “an exhaustive researcher and a pleasing writer, [who] has produced a perceptive chronicle of war and friendship, shifting tastes and lasting art -- and of the painted reflections of a pond that became a mirror.”Â
A visual presentation on Giverny, led by Roy Wright, will highlight the meeting.

The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in the Library’s Michael Armstrong Community Room.

New members are always welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring a friend and to bring a lunch. Dessert will be provided.
