 | Essays written by five Dabney S. Lancaster Community College students were selected as among the top ten in a Virginia Outdoor Writers Association Collegiate Writing Contest held during the spring semester. The five DSLCC students whose work was recognized included: Travis Hart and David Allen Shores (pictured, left), both of Clifton Forge; Meghan Elizabeth McGowan of Raphine; Danielle McGuire of Lexington; and Shannon Staton (pictured, right) of Buchanan. They are all students in Mattie Quesenberry Smith’s College Composition class at DSLCC; Hart, Shores and Staton attend the class on the Clifton Forge campus. Judging was done by Cooperative Living Magazine Editors Richard Johnstone and Bill Sherrod, and Marika Byrd, a freelance writer. The first-place essay, written by a student from Virginia Commonwealth University, will be considered for publication in Virginia Wildlife Magazine. Other top entries, including those from DSLCC students, may appear in other publications. Fall classes begin August 20 at DSLCC; call Student Services at (540) 863-2820 for more information or to make an appointment with an academic advisor.
