Covington Resident, Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Member, Dies At Age 93

Minnie Marie Crowder Slayton, age 93, of 4014 Jackson River Road, Covington, Virginia, passed peacefully into Heaven on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Good Samaritan Hospice in Roanoke, Virginia.

Marie was born on February 18, 1932, in Alleghany County, Virginia to the late Charles Lewis Crowder and Alpha Mildred Bowen Crowder.

She provided geriatric nursing care for various area families and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Falling Spring Fire Department as well as a founding member of their Ladies Auxiliary. She served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. She was an avid bird watcher, enjoyed following the weather, and cared for a number of animals throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Brownie Slayton; a daughter, Glenna Fisher; a son, Michael A. Slayton; a son-in-law, Michael A. Andrews; three sisters, Irene Glenn, Georgie Johnson, and Shelby Crizer; a brother, Bobby Crowder; and grandsons, Richard O’Conner and Jonathan O'Conner.

Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Andrews of Covington and Barbara VanLew of Salem; five grandchildren, Wallace O'Conner, Jr. (Kim), Megan Wardle (Matt), Robert Andrews (Shania), Sara Slayton Oldendorf (Ken), and Emily Slayton Gherman (Thomas); seven great-grandchildren, Cameron O'Conner, Kaylee O’Conner, Kenny Oldendorf, Kyle Oldendorf, Abraham Gherman, Wyatt Gherman, and Leah Wardle; her special friend, Dennis Wampler; and her cat, Sudie.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor, with Reverend Bill Gilliland officiating. Interment will immediately follow. Pallbearers will be Wallace O'Conner, Jr., Robert Andrews, Matthew Wardle, Dennis Wampler, Cameron O'Conner, David Ryder, and Jason Stanley. Alternate pallbearers will be Howard Liptrap, Jr. and Charles Kellison. The family will receive friends at Nicely Funeral Home on Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time to proceed to the cemetery.
